How We Score Businesses

RGV Review uses a transparent, data-driven 6-factor algorithm to rank every business in the Rio Grande Valley on a 0–100 scale — updated weekly from verified Google reviews.

The RGV Review Reputation Score

Every business in the RGV Review directory receives a Reputation Score between 0 and 100. This score is calculated automatically using verified data from Google Business Profiles and is updated on a regular basis to reflect the most current customer feedback.

Unlike simple star averages, the RGV Review score accounts for six distinct dimensions of reputation: how good the reviews are, how many there are, how recent they are, how consistently they arrive, how often the owner responds, and the overall sentiment of the language customers use.

The result is a single, comparable number that gives consumers a reliable way to evaluate businesses across the Rio Grande Valley — from McAllen and Edinburg to Harlingen, Brownsville, Mission, and beyond.

The 6 Scoring Factors

The total score is the sum of six factors, each worth a defined maximum number of points. The maximum possible score before penalties is 95 points.

No. RGV Review is an independent directory that indexes publicly available Google review data. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Google.
Can a business pay to improve their score?
No. Scores are calculated entirely from verified Google review data using our algorithm. No payment or relationship with RGV Review affects a business's score.

Claiming is free. Visit rgvreview.com and click "Claim Your Listing." You'll authenticate with Google to verify ownership, after which you can see your full score breakdown, respond to reviews, and track competitors.
Why does my score differ from my Google star rating?
Because RGV Review scores six factors, not just stars. A business with a 4.8-star rating but only 3 reviews and no owner responses will score lower than a business with a 4.5-star rating, 80 reviews, recent activity, and consistent owner engagement.
What is the best restaurant in McAllen, Texas?
The top-ranked restaurants in McAllen can be found on the RGV Review leaderboard filtered by the Restaurants category. Rankings are based on verified Google reviews and updated weekly.
How can a business improve their RGV Review score?
The most impactful improvements are: (1) consistently earning new reviews to improve recency and velocity scores, (2) responding to every review — especially negative ones — to improve response rate and eliminate penalties, and (3) maintaining a high average star rating by delivering excellent service.
